Book Making
This book showcases a sampling of handmade books demonstrating the scope of the craft. Each piece functions like a book, but a number of the works also curl, hang, twirl, or resemble puzzle boxes. While there are rectangular volumes, some are circular or shaped like a house or are completely abstract. Fine craftsmanship is also evident whether it a finely tooled leather cover embellished with traditional gold-leaf lettering or an exotic Ethiopian binding where a netting of waxed linen weaves together to create an open spine. Included are Jeanne Germani{u2019}s 2Cloudspeak3 featuring papers handmade from such materials as recycled denim, thistle, and plant matter. Chris Bivin{u2019}s codex-style volume features curious, tiny, found objects. One of Laura Wait{u2019}s untitled pieces utilizes a raised-cord binding to connect a pair of stained-cedar covers with abstract aluminum letterforms attached. The collection is juried by Steve Miller.
