“Of all the miniscule formal scripts, Carolingian represents a standard of simplicity and beauty against which all other writing styles can be measured” – loosely abbreviated from The Story of Writing by Donald Jackson.

Widespread literacy, education and knowledge was becoming important around Europe in the 8th century, however many of the scripts used in scriptoria to produce books and documents were bordering on illegible.

To create order and uniformity of texts created in Europe and facilitate learning, a script was slowly developed and adopted that improved legibility using a variety of techniques that we still use today. This includes spaces between words, standard letterforms, punctuation, and using upper and lower case for titles.

Carolingian script helped to spread widespread literacy, forms the basis of modern lowercase typefaces and preserved most of our contemporary knowledge of classic Roman literature; amazing for 26 small letters!

In the morning we’ll look at some historical and modern examples, study and write the letterforms.

In the afternoon we’ll try writing much smaller and produce a small page of writing.
