SUMMARY:"Bookhand Roman Capitals" with Jane and "Book Binding" with Jo
DESCRIPTION:Cost: Half day members/non members $20/$25\, full day $40/$50 \nThese simple\, yet elegant capitals are more relaxed than their grand formal cousins. For those who attended the Skelton Capitals workshop\, here is a chance to put some meat on the bones! \nMaterials for the morning: Just your basic kit (as detailed in our Beginners page)\, with the aim of producing your final folded page of writing for the book (see below). \n In the afternoon we’ll bind samples of our year’s calligraphy to create a memento of our 2025 workshops. Alternatively\, we can bind blank pages to create a journal. \nDrum leaf binding is an easy construction if it is your first ever handmade book\, and an extremely useful binding\, having minimal design issues\, a flat opening and allows imagery to flow over the centre fold with no sewing thread. \n \nMaterials: \n\nYour pages – 10-20 A4 pages with your work on one side only or blank pages for a journal. We will fold the pages in half short to short side\, so if you are displaying work it should be designed to look right in A4 landscape. Don’t fold the pages yet. Stack them in order. The paper can be any weight.\nEndpapers – 2 x A4 similar weight to your pages\nCovers – 2 x A5 card\, decorated or plain\, 160gsm or more\nSpine Cover – book cloth or card (around 160gsm). Best to have a plain colour to go with your cover and endpapers. 1 x A5 high and 10cm wide (paper grain goes with the height)\nAnd –\n2 pieces of stiff card A5 high and 5cm wide\ngluestick\nscrap paper for gluing\nbone folder\n2 or 3 clamps\nruler and pencil\nwhite pencil\ncutting mat and cutter

SUMMARY:"Uncial Script" with Ailsa Fergusson
DESCRIPTION:Cost: Half day members/non members $20/$25\, full day $40/$50 \nUncial is an uppercase script commonly used by Latin and Greek scribes between the 4th and 8th centuries\, forming a fascinating step in the evolution of the lowercase letters we use today. It is most familiar to many in the form used in The Book of Kells. \nIn the morning session we will explore many of the uncial variations that have evolved over the last 1500 years through to the contemporary\, including one that will bring a big smile to your face. \nIn the afternoon we will take a journey into paper cut forms of uncial\, suitable for simple pop up lettering and beautiful layered cut lettering. Then we’ll move on to some Celtic knotting for those ready for a greater challenge. \nMaterials: \nMorning:  \n\n3.8mm parallel pen\npractise paper\, non-bleeding layout paper\, A3 if possible\nslope board for writing if you have one\nruler\, pencil\npointed pen if you have one\nbrushes suitable for brush lettering to explore some variations of uncial\, if you have some.\n\nAfternoon: \n\npaper folding and cutting tools\ncutting mat and craft knife/paper cutting tool that’s very sharp *\nrange of coloured and textured papers 120-160gsm A4\nremovable/magic tape that you need to keep the layout paper in place so you will have a beautifully cut final piece.\n\nAdditional notes on materials from Ailsa: \n*I will also be bringing some sharpening tools to show you how to then sharpen the edge even better ….. \nThe papers for cutting depend on which option you choose. The pop-up lettering needs only a couple of sheets of A4 size in a light coloured card so the shadows read well. \nThe non-popup lettering needs one sheet of a plain colour card and a few complimentary patterned pieces to be viewed through the cut areas. There are many variations from simple to complex for these\, and the very keen can cut some Celtic knotting\, but suspect time may run out for this\, as I will not be teaching the drawing of the knotting in this short workshop. \nI will also bring some patterned papers for those without paste papers\, maps and old wrapping paper supplies…..

SUMMARY:"A Journey Exploring Text" with Jo Cromack
DESCRIPTION:Text can be added to all sorts of artworks\, and we shall look at ways that this can be done. Use your handwriting and a variety of tools and media to create textures from text. These can then be used as backgrounds\, elements of contrast or for special details in your artwork. We will oscillate between legible and illegible letters. No precise letter drawing here and ‘good handwriting’ is not a pre-requisite. You will discover text possibilities in a relaxing but busy session. \nCost members $40/non members $50 \nExploring Text Materials List \n

SUMMARY:"Elements & Principles of Calligraphy & Lettering" with Sharon Harrup
DESCRIPTION:Cost for the two days $80 members/$100 non members \nLet’s turn back time to the days of black and white\, dusty chalkboards and the sound of a rapping cane on the desk by the teacher (me)! After all\, this is the theory side of art so these two days need to be looong and boy will that clock go slow\, right? \n\nNepareizi. Falsch. Errado. Faux (wrrrrrong!).  Get ready to enter Willy Wonka’s Calligraphy Factory! The elements and principles applied to calligraphy are creative gems that will help you to think more broadly about the possibilities with your work and guide you towards generating more unique ideas and solutions. \nWe often give very little thought to these building blocks and the rules around using them when immersed in our calligraphic work. And if you are like me\, you tend to rely on your own creative judgement with these techniques sitting quietly in the background. They are made a little more elusive because our craft sits between art and typography\, but these guidelines can be game-changers and really help push the boundaries on what is possible in your designs. \nThis workshop will help you experiment and plan your pieces in a more considered way and identify how to salvage projects that have gone wrong. But perhaps most importantly\, you will learn techniques that will guide you in developing or refining your own style\, which is fundamental when we calligraphers spend a lot of time learning techniques from others with their own unique approach. \nDeveloping your pieces with the elements and principles applied to calligraphy will help you work with greater clarity\, and assess things more objectively. Come along for a few days of creative challenges\, fun and calligraphic indulgence! \n\nMATERIALS FOR ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES OF CALLIGRAPHY AND LETTERING

SUMMARY:"Learning to Drive the Pentel Brush" with Ailsa Fergusson
DESCRIPTION:Learning to drive the Pental brush. \n \n\n\n\n\nA session learning to push the brush to extremes\, and then refining your techniques to your chosen area\, either for patterns\, image making or calligraphic mark making. \nFor this you need the largest of the Pental brushes and must be the pointed one. Top brush in the image below. ( I have found some cheaper brands do not form the fine point.) A large brush can always be used for thin lines\, but a small brush can only make small lines. \nI can supply Chinese/Sumi ink to those that do not have their own\, and ask participants to bring an A2 size sheet of cartridge paper. We will cover one side of it with a very wide range of marks over the morning\, and after lunch the sheet will be folded into a booklet for the afternoon work to be done page by page. The morning will be spent getting familiar with the physical moves needed for a range of marks\, while in the afternoon these moves can be used for lettering or drawing. \nThe next most important thing required for this workshop is enough cushions to make sure your elbows are much higher then the table when sitting. Otherwise you will be standing all day\, as the arms not able to move freely when sitting too low. I know we are all different proportions\, but I need to be raised by 15- 20 cm at most tables. \nI will supply some scrap paper for testing ink and brush strokes on. \nAdditional gear \nRuler\npencil\npaper towel\nAtomiser of water (I use empty spray bottle from optometrists) I will have one to share if you do not have one\nWater jar and small dishes for ink to be diluted into.\nA larger brush for use with water only – putting a wash on paper.\nA2 sheet of cartridge paper \n$40 members/$50 non members \n\n\n\n\n \n

SUMMARY:"Celtic Knots" with Mark Donnelly
DESCRIPTION:$40 members/$50 non members \nHiberno-Saxon Knots\, more commonly known as Celtic Knots\, date from around the 5th to the 9th centuries. The Celts did not invent knot work as many cultures around the world used some sort of lacework as part of their art. It was\, however\, the Irish and Anglo-Saxon monastic scriptoriums that took the knot work to the peak of artistic excellence that we know today. \nIn this workshop we will explore a number of different methods to create knots from the simple to the more complex. Then we will apply the new learned techniques to a project of your own choice or recreate one from one of the many examples available from the great manuscripts. \nMaterials: \nAll you really need is a pencil\, eraser\, ruler and paper. \nBut it’s also good to have – \n\npencil sharpener if you are using a traditional pencil\nadditional leads if you are using a mechanical pencil\na couple of different lead hardnesses such as HB\, 2B (helps but not obiligatory)\na smooth textured paper (photocopy paper is fine) OR hot press paper if you are going to use watercolours or gouache\n\nIf you want to colour your knotwork – \n\ncolour pencils\, watercolours or gouache\n\n

SUMMARY:"Writing Numerals" with Jo Cromack
DESCRIPTION:The 9 Signs – Writing Numerals \nThe Hindu-Arabic numerals as we know them today only became widely used in the west in the 15th Century. Until then Roman numerals were in use. \nUsing symbols not letters for numerals probably started with the Brahmi in India around the 3rd Century BCE. The symbols developed over centuries\, were taken up by the Arabs in the 8th C and from here they spread to Spain and Europe in the 9th C. Their use however\, spread gradually as the Christians regarded the numerals as evil and dangerous – because they came from the Muslim world. This new numeral system was extremely practical for trade\, accounting and business records and eventually replaced Roman Numerals for arithmetic. \nThe Hindu-Arabic numeral system has been included in the book\, ‘The Greatest Inventions of the Past 2000 Years’. \nDue to their late introduction to Europe\, scripts do not have a corresponding set of Hindu-Arabic numerals. We have to somehow make these separately evolved shapes fit with our writing. \nWe’ll study how to write numerals so that they match the script we’re working with. \nWe’ll look at a couple of historical scripts\, a couple of modern ones and try some layouts using numbers. \nMaterials List for Numerals
