SUMMARY:"Uncial Script" with Ailsa Fergusson
DESCRIPTION:Cost: Half day members/non members $20/$25\, full day $40/$50 \nUncial is an uppercase script commonly used by Latin and Greek scribes between the 4th and 8th centuries\, forming a fascinating step in the evolution of the lowercase letters we use today. It is most familiar to many in the form used in The Book of Kells. \nOn Sunday 20th July – morning session\, we will look at a single style of uncial that I enjoy using\, with a few major variations of the letter forms. A parallel pen will be the only writing tool needed for this session\, along with suitable practice paper. \nIn the afternoon we will explore text size variations\, making a small ‘zine’ style booklet on a better quality paper\, starting with A3 size. I will introduce a simple way to make large writing tools for yourself. \nMaterials: \nMorning: \n\n3.8mm parallel pen\npractice paper\, non-bleeding layout paper\, A3 if possible\nslope board for writing if you have one\nruler\, pencil\n\nAfternoon: \n\nlarge and small writing tools\n2 clothes pegs\nyour expired plastic drivers license card or equivalent size\nsheet of A3 cartridge paper approx 160gsm\ncoloured inks if you have them\na quote to play with for composition\npaper folding and cutting tools\n\n

\nIn the morning session we will explore many of the uncial variations that have evolved over the last 1500 years through to the contemporary\, including one that will bring a big smile to your face. \nIn the afternoon we will take a journey into paper cut forms of uncial\, suitable for simple pop up lettering and beautiful layered cut lettering. Then we’ll move on to some Celtic knotting for those ready for a greater challenge. \nMaterials: \nMorning:  \n\n3.8mm parallel pen\npractise paper\, non-bleeding layout paper\, A3 if possible\nslope board for writing if you have one\nruler\, pencil\npointed pen if you have one\nbrushes suitable for brush lettering to explore some variations of uncial\, if you have some.\n\nAfternoon: \n\npaper folding and cutting tools\ncutting mat and craft knife/paper cutting tool that’s very sharp *\nrange of coloured and textured papers 120-160gsm A4\nremovable/magic tape that you need to keep the layout paper in place so you will have a beautifully cut final piece.\n\nAdditional notes on materials from Ailsa: \n*I will also be bringing some sharpening tools to show you how to then sharpen the edge even better ….. \nThe papers for cutting depend on which option you choose. The pop-up lettering needs only a couple of sheets of A4 size in a light coloured card so the shadows read well. \nThe non-popup lettering needs one sheet of a plain colour card and a few complimentary patterned pieces to be viewed through the cut areas. There are many variations from simple to complex for these\, and the very keen can cut some Celtic knotting\, but suspect time may run out for this\, as I will not be teaching the drawing of the knotting in this short workshop. \nI will also bring some patterned papers for those without paste papers\, maps and old wrapping paper supplies…..

SUMMARY:"Bookhand Roman Capitals" with Jane and "Book Binding" with Jo
DESCRIPTION:Cost: Half day members/non members $20/$25\, full day $40/$50 \nThese simple\, yet elegant capitals are more relaxed than their grand formal cousins. For those who attended the Skelton Capitals workshop\, here is a chance to put some meat on the bones! \nMaterials for the morning: Just your basic kit (as detailed in our Beginners page)\, with the aim of producing your final folded page of writing for the book (see below). \n In the afternoon we’ll bind samples of our year’s calligraphy to create a memento of our 2025 workshops. Alternatively\, we can bind blank pages to create a journal. \nDrum leaf binding is an easy construction if it is your first ever handmade book\, and an extremely useful binding\, having minimal design issues\, a flat opening and allows imagery to flow over the centre fold with no sewing thread. \n \nMaterials: \n\nYour pages – 10-20 A4 pages with your work on one side only or blank pages for a journal. We will fold the pages in half short to short side\, so if you are displaying work it should be designed to look right in A4 landscape. Don’t fold the pages yet. Stack them in order. The paper can be any weight.\nEndpapers – 2 x A4 similar weight to your pages\nCovers – 2 x A5 card\, decorated or plain\, 160gsm or more\nSpine Cover – book cloth or card (around 160gsm). Best to have a plain colour to go with your cover and endpapers. 1 x A5 high and 10cm wide (paper grain goes with the height)\nAnd –\n2 pieces of stiff card A5 high and 5cm wide\ngluestick\nscrap paper for gluing\nbone folder\n2 or 3 clamps\nruler and pencil\nwhite pencil\ncutting mat and cutter

SUMMARY:"Carolingian Miniscule Script 8th C - 14th C" with Jo Cromack
DESCRIPTION:Cost: Half day members/non members $20/$25\, full day $40/$50 \n“Of all the miniscule formal scripts\, Carolingian represents a standard of simplicity and beauty against which all other writing styles can be measured” – loosely abbreviated from The Story of Writing by Donald Jackson. \nWidespread literacy\, education and knowledge was becoming important around Europe in the 8th century\, however many of the scripts used in scriptoria to produce books and documents were bordering on illegible. \nTo create order and uniformity of texts created in Europe and facilitate learning\, a script was slowly developed and adopted that improved legibility using a variety of techniques that we still use today. This includes spaces between words\, standard letterforms\, punctuation\, and using upper and lower case for titles. \nCarolingian script helped to spread widespread literacy\, forms the basis of modern lowercase typefaces and preserved most of our contemporary knowledge of classic Roman literature; amazing for 26 small letters! \nIn the morning we’ll look at some historical and modern examples\, study and write the letterforms. \nIn the afternoon we’ll try writing much smaller and produce a small page of writing. \nPlease find the materials list in the link below: \nCarolingian materials list \n
