Fraktur – the beginning

Fraktur was made as a typeface by the order of German Emperor Maximilian in 16th century. It was based on Bastard handwriting. Many artists refined the typeface and now we can see wonderful books which were printed with it. Since then, many variations of Fraktur by calligraphers.

In this class, we will learn the history of Fraktur and two of the most beautiful letter shapes by Neudörffer and Schöngsperger. This will give you the better understanding of other Fraktur variations (such as Georg Bocskay, Herman Zapf, Julian Waters and Lucan Barcellona etc.)
