“Italics” Part 2 with Lyndall and “Asemic Writing” with Ailsa

Morning Session:

Italic Variations – Following on from Ailsa’s introduction to Italics in September, in this session we will try our hand at some classic Italic variations as well as some less traditional ones. Suitable for beginners and old hands.

Materials: The materials in bold are required, the unbolded are optional.

  • 3.8mm parallel pen and ink cartridges or ink to dip
  • practise paper, non bleeding layout paper, A3 if possible
  • slope board for writing if you have one
  • ruler, pencil
  • other sized calligraphy pens (larger or smaller sizes, different eg ruling pen, split nib, folded pen, coit etc) if you have them
  • colour (gouache or ink)
  • better quality papers, smooth or textured to try

Lyndall will bring a variety of tools for you to try if you don’t have your own.

Afternoon Session:

Asemic Writing is creative mark making without the need to have a specific meaning, while still creating emotion. After a morning getting your letters perfect, the afternoon is about playing with composition without making a single ‘letter’.

Materials:

  • 4+ sheets of A3 cartridge paper
  • black ink, Chinese if you have it
  • one contrasting coloured ink
  • glue stick
  • full range of ‘writing’ tools from from very wide ie 5-10cm
  • balsa wood
  • flat brushes
  • felt
  • fabric over credit card as we made in July workshop
  • suede pens as used in July
  • two thinner pointed brushes
  • pointed pens
  • monoline pens

Ailsa will bring a range of tools for you to explore, so DO NOT buy anything!
